Powder’s Fund

Picture
Powder was a beautiful puppy who came to us in need of medical assistance. She had been diagnosed with megaesophagus. Normally when a dog swallows, a muscular tube called the esophagus moves the food from their mouth to their stomach to be digested. In megaesophagus, dogs are unable to swallow food normally because their esophagus lacks the muscular tone and motility needed to move food and water. Instead, their esophagus dilates and food backs up, causing them to regurgitate the meal.

After seeing our veterinarian, we learned that this was not the most serious of the condition she had… she was also diagnosed with Persistent Right Aortic Arch.
Persistent right aortic arch is a congenital abnormality of the blood vessels of the heart that can affect esophageal function. Basically, an embryonic branch of the aorta fails to regress and is wrapped around the esophagus when a puppy or kitten is born. This puts pressure on the tube, preventing the passage of food in the esophagus when the pet eats, causing regurgitation. Surgery can correct the problem, and follow-up care can usually reverse the esophageal effects, especially if done early in a pet’s life.

We knew we had to do whatever it took to save the sweet girl. When we called a specialty hospital about having the necessary surgery, we found out that it would cost $5000.

Despite the cost, we believe that every life is worth saving. No life comes with a price tag or expiration date. We knew that we had to raise the money necessary to do what we had to do to help Powder

We quickly went about raising the necessary funds to help her. We were so happy that within a few days, we had secured the necessary money to provide the life-saving surgery.

One of the greatest risks that come along with having megaesophagus is aspiration pneumonia. Sadly, Powder developed this and despite care provided at an emergency hospital, she passed away. We were all devastated.

To honor Powder and her great fight against the conditions that she was born with, we decided to establish Powder’s Fund. This fund would be specifically available to treat shelter animals in need of either emergency veterinary care or treatment for conditions requiring extensive veterinary care. This would include  heartworm treatment, treatment for canine parvovirus, amputations, enucleations and longer-term treatments of conditions like mange and ringworm.

We contacted the kind people who donated to Powder’s surgery and asked if they would like their donations refunded since she was unable to have the surgery, or if they would prefer that their donations go in to Powder‘s fund.  Everyone we contacted wanted us to keep the money, and Powder’s Fund was born.

You can make a difference in the life of a pet in need by clicking “Donate” and choosing “Powder’s Fund.” you see us share a pet's story and notice we ask for donation to "Powder's Fund," please remember the sweet little white puppy who gave it her all.

In loving memory of Powder May 23, 2021-August 6, 2021
